For years, many people in India invested their savings in Sahara India schemes. They were promised good returns, but after some time, the company couldn’t return the money. This left thousands of families in trouble. After long legal fights, the Supreme Court in 2023 ordered that all genuine investors must get their money back. To manage this process, the Ministry of Cooperation has started an online refund system under the Central Registrar of Cooperative Societies (CRCS). The government has approved ₹5,000 crore to be paid to verified investors.
Who Is Eligible to Apply?
Only those who invested in four specific Sahara cooperative societies are eligible. These are:
- Sahara Credit Cooperative Society Limited (Lucknow)
- Sahara Universal Multipurpose Society Limited (Bhopal)
- Hamara India Credit Cooperative Society Limited (Kolkata)
- Star Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited (Hyderabad)
If your investment was made in any other Sahara scheme or company, you cannot apply through this refund process.

What Documents Do You Need?
To claim your refund, you must have proof of your investment. This includes your membership number, deposit account number, original deposit certificates, or your investment passbook. All these documents must clearly show your name and the amount you deposited.
You also need to register on the official refund website: mocrefund.crcs.gov.in
If your refund amount is ₹50,000 or more, you must also provide your PAN card. Without this, your claim may be delayed or even rejected.
How Much Time Will It Take?
The refund processing time depends on the amount you invested. If your claim is small, it may take 30 to 45 days. For medium claims, it could take 45 to 60 days. If your investment is high and your documents are complete, the refund may take up to 90 days.
How to Check Your Refund Status?
To check the status of your application, visit the same website again. Click on the “Check Status” option, enter your reference number, and submit. You will see your application status — whether it’s still being verified, approved, rejected, or already processed for payment.
If your application is rejected, the reason will also be shown. Common reasons include missing documents, incorrect information, or applying under the wrong society.
What Is the State-Wise Refund List?
The government is handling the refund process state by state. So if you want to know whether your claim has been processed, you can check the “State-Wise List” on the website. Select your state from the dropdown, and search for your name or registration number.
Stay Safe from Frauds and Scams
Since this is a big refund process, scammers may try to take advantage. Be alert. Never pay anyone to speed up your refund. Only trust the official website. Do not share your OTPs or reference numbers with unknown people. If you receive any strange calls or messages, report them immediately.
